Verizon can now offer customers additional precise positioning capabilities like indoor wayfinding, geofencing and location sharing
Verizon has acquired precise positioning company Senion, and with it, the company’s indoor positioning platform, which uses machine-learning sensors to deliver sub-meter accuracy for precise positioning and navigation of indoor spaces. The acquisition expands the Verizon’s location-based technology offerings and will provide customers with capabilities like indoor wayfinding, geofencing, location sharing and analytics and predictive intelligence, the carrier said.
More specifically, Senion’s technology includes its Indoor Positioning System (IPS), which Verizon describes as a “high-powered and robust” indoor positioning system that can be used by enterprise management to locate and understand the movement of people, machines and IoT-enabled items within any space. Verizon said the technology can also help optimize how space is being used, improve employee efficiency by making it easier to coordinate in-person meetings and even ensure worker safety by, for instance, tracking whether workers are adhering to social distance protocols.
“Verizon Location Technology is working to build a more efficient and productive world. This involves giving machines sight and providing enterprise leaders with deeper insights, enabling the orchestration of any space,” said Jeff Frantz, executive director of Verizon Location Technology. “Sensor fusion and indoor positioning are foundational components for these next-generation capabilities. Combining Senion’s superior technology with the location-accuracy, speed, throughput and reliability of Verizon’s 5G platform will help us push the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Precision location technology has been something of a focus for Verizon lately, which, in April, made a real-time kinematics (RTK) service called Hyper Precision Location (HPL) available to its customers and app developers in more than 100 U.S. markets. First revealed in August 2020, HPL, when used with Verizon’s 5G Edge, delivers precise positioning data for emerging cellular-vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology.
“Senion was created with the vision that one day our sensor fusion technology would allow for precise positioning for anyone and anything, at anytime,” said Dr. Christian Lundquist, CEO and co-founder of Senion. “By leveraging Verizon’s expertise in connectivity and location technology, we can further our work to improve workflows for companies and create seamless, responsive and location-aware services.”
