New ebook hits on multiplexing, PON, business cases and other key aspects of fiber deployment
Whether its used for metro capacity, backhaul or inside a building, fiber is a cornerstone of global communications networks. CommScope is a major player in fiber, as well as many other telecom infrastructure components, and recently highlighted a number of key aspects associated with fiber in this ebook.
Mark Alrutz, vice president, Global Service Provider, said, “If you don’t learn fro history you’re doomed to repeat it…We have learned much over the years, both positive and negative, how to truly make these networks cost effective as well as to perform properly. The last thing you want to do is install a network, put all that effort and cost into that, and find that the performance or the capabilities of that network are obsolete as soon as you get it built.”
According to the company, fiber will reach 1 billion homes by 2021, which has broader implications in that communities with gigabit broadband have higher per capita and total GDPs.
In the ebook, CommScope tracks fiber to the home, fiber to the curb, fiber to the building and fiber to the node/neighborhood. According to the authors, “Fiber cabling provides the foundation for today and tomorrow’s communication networks. A fiber backbone might run right up to a wireless access point or it could terminate in a company’s basement, a distribution point on a street corner or in an apartment building. There are different approaches to making the final connection from the fiber backbone to the user in the home or business.”
The ebook also provides a useful breakdown of the differences between single-mode and multi-mode fiber, and time domain multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing.
“We get so many questions from our customers – who are either deploying an FTTX network for the first time or are curious about new technologies – about how they can benefit from the performance and economics of the right network,” Alrutz said. “We decided to summarize this knowledge into an eBook that shares with our customers CommScope’s considerable fiber expertise.”
