The new AWS cloud region is expected to become active in mid-2022
Amazon Web Services revealed big plans to spend $2.8 billion to build a second AWS cloud region in India. The new region, located in the state of Telangana in the Hyderabad tech hub, is, according to AWS chief evangelist Jeff Barr, just the latest in a “long series of investments” the company will make in India.
“The existing region in Mumbai and the upcoming region in Hyderabad are designed to support companies in India as they innovate and embrace digital transformation,” Barr said. “To this end, we continue to invest in programs that are designed to upskill local students and developers, with the goal of creating the next generation of IT leaders in India.”
“As the capital and the largest city in Telangana, Hyderabad is already an important talent hub for IT professionals and entrepreneurs,” he added.
The new region will become part of AWS’s Asia Pacific cloud, joining the existing region in Mumbai, which launched in mid-2016.
“Together with our AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region, we’re providing customers with more flexibility and choice, while allowing them to architect their infrastructure for even greater fault tolerance, resiliency, and availability across geographic locations,” said Peter DeSantis, senior vice president of global infrastructure and customer support, Amazon Web Services.
Prior to this announcement, Amazon has already made key investments in Hyderabad, opening a 9.5-acre campus there last year that house an impressive 15,000 employees. In addition, the city also has three Amazon fulfillment centers, as well as has a significant customer service operation.
Once the Hyderabad region becomes active sometime in 2022, AWS’s total global regions will reach 29. Today, AWS has 77 availability zones across 24 regions, with more prospective regions, including Jakarta, Indonesia and Osaka, Japan, on the horizon.
Prior to this announcement, AWS said that is will establish a cloud computing region in Zurich, Switzerland in the second half of 2022. And earlier this year, the company launched regions in Italy and South Africa.
