Verizon makes SD-WAN solution available on a wholesale basis

Verizon Partner Solutions (VPS), announced it is making its software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) solution available to wholesale customers to better control operational costs and boost bandwidth efficiency.

SD-WAN is already offered by several service providers. According to IDC’s Worldwide SD-WAN Forecast, 2017–2021, over the next five years, SD-WAN sales are expected to increase at a 69% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), reaching $8.05 billion in 2021. Making its SD-WAN solution available on a wholesale basis gives Verizon a competitive edge in enabling vendors to make the service available to business customers faster.

The VPS SD-WAN Services includes built-in load balancing and automatic fail-over capability; application optimization to enable customers to access centralized network visibility and control; intelligent path control that determines traffic path based on source, destination and application; connectivity with advanced encryption standard (AES) connectivity; and centralized SDN control and policy manager.

“Verizon’s SD-WAN solution essentially gives enterprises the best of both worlds – the power of the Internet and the performance and reliability of a private IP network – to help them keep up with the continued growth of network traffic,” said Eric Cevis, senior vice president and group president at Verizon Partner Solutions, in a prepared statement. “Network traffic demand continues to increase due to SaaS applications, cloud migrations, video and IoT. SD WAN improves bandwidth usage and enables the network to act as a sensor to enhance delivery of applications.”

Verizon originally deployed a managed SD-WAN solution alongside Cisco in 2015, which leveraged the latter company’s Intelligent WAN (IWAN) technology to keep up to pace with the surge of network traffic. Offering a SD-WAN solution to wholesale customers could open up new windows of revenue for the company.

Verizon isn’t the only service provider to make such a move in recent memory. Earlier this year Windstream, for example, deployed a new SD-WAN offering as part of its wholesale reseller program in order to reach other verticals. According to the company’s third-quarter results, wholesale service revenues reached $173 million, an increase of 11 percent year-over-year.
