The Dimensity 1080 chipset supports sub-6GHz 5G and Wi-Fi 6

MediaTek says its newest chipset, called the Dimensity 1080 (D1080), offers 5G smartphones a “nice performance bump and significantly upgraded camera features.”

When compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 920, the 1080, sports an upgraded octa-core CPU with two Arm Cortex-A78 CPU cores operating at up to 2.6GHz, and supports a 200MP main camera and MediaTek’s Imagiq image signal processor (ISP). The chipset also integrates a hardware-accelerated HDR video recording engine to process up to 4K resolution, which the company says provides superior video capture results in all lighting conditions. In addition, MediatTek said that mobile gamers will benefit from the Dimensity 1080’s HyperEngine 3.0 gaming enhancements, as well as the chipset’s integrated AI processing unit 3.0 (APU 3.0) for optimal power efficiency.

The D1080 also supports sub-6GHz 5G networks and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.

“Continuing MediaTek’s legacy of optimizing power and performance, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations about what a 5G smartphone can do,” CH Chen, deputy general manager of Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek. “This new chipset is designed to further enhance many of the functions that made its predecessor great, including processing power, camera and video quality, and time to market for manufacturers.”

Previous additions to its Dimensity portfolio were announced in May 2022: the Dimensity 1050 system-on-chip (SoC), which was its first mmWave 5G chipset and the Dimensity 930, which was designed for gaming and enables 5G smartphones to download data faster and stay connected regardless of location with 2CC-CA, including mixed duplex FDD+TDD for higher speeds and greater reach.

MediaTek said smartphones featuring the latest addition to the lineup — the Dimensity 1080 — are expected to hit the market in Q4 2022.
