Huawei announces DMM open source project
Huawei recently rolled out its new dual modes, multi-prococols, multi-instances (DMM) open source project with the aim of redesigning the protocol stack container in networking.
The company’s DMM is a Fast Data project and part of the Linux Foundation’s FD.io (Fast data – Input/Output) community, which houses projects and libraries. FD.io provides the software defined infrastructure developer community a landing site with multiple projects centered on developing innovations in software-based packet processing, according to the Linux Foundation.
Huawei said DMM will make it possible to use diverse protocol stacks for different apps as well as simplify the process of developing a new protocol stack. Per Techopedia, the protocols in a stack “determine the interconnectivity rules for a layered network model such as in the OSI or TCP/IP models.” The DMM project is intended to elevate different protocols for apps in a single host or within one app, while reducing overall development, operational and maintenance costs, according to Huawei.
“Huawei wants to establish an ecosystem for today’s variety of application and protocol stacks. Today’s ecosystem demonstrates a clear need for diversity. App users will benefit from this platform and will be able to apply it to their app scenarios without worrying about the stack choice. App developers will also be able to use different sockets to drive different stacks in one app,” said Chenxi Wang, VP of network strategy and ecosystem at Huawei, in a statement. “For Huawei, the next generation of high-throughput/low-latency solutions will also benefit from this plug-and-play system. This solution will bring a new experience specifically for app and stack developers.”
Huawei has been long involved in the FD.io community as a founding member, and upgraded from a gold to platinum member last December. Other founding members of the group include Cisco, Ericsson, Intel, 6WIND, Brocade, Cavium Networks, Comcast, Inocybe Technologies, Mesosphere, PLUMgrid, MetaSwitch and Red Hat
The first version of DMM with FD.io will be released later this month. It will include a common stack API framework and an interface document. Moving forward, Huawei said DMM will try to integrate other stacks, such as ‘f-stack’ and VPP communication library, while improving the performance and transparency of the frame layer.
