The GSMA GLOMO awards highlight those at the forefront of mobile innovation

BARCELONA–The GSMA released the winners of the 2020 Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards, which call out the companies and individuals at the forefront of mobile innovation. The awards include a variety of categories, but let’s take a closer look at some of this year’s stand outs.

Ericsson’s dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology, called Ericsson Spectrum Sharing, took home two awards this year: Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough and the Outstanding Mobile Technology Award.

DSS is a software-based functionality that allows a base station to simultaneously transmit LTE and 5G NR communications at the same time in the same band. This means operators can avoid the costly, time-consuming process of re-farming spectrum while still scaling out 5G coverage in mid-

Ericsson Spectrum Sharing software dynamically shares spectrum between 4G and 5G carriers based on traffic demand. The switch between carriers happens within milliseconds, which minimizes spectrum wastage and allows for best end-user performance.

Vodafone, Parallel Wireless and the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) took home the award for Best Mobile Network Infrastructure for their Global OpenRAN Deployments.

While open RAN refers broadly to the idea of developing open interfaces and inoperability to build multi-vendor RAN sites using commodity hardware, OpenRAN is a specific Telecom Infra Project work item that TIP describes as being focused “on developing a vendor-neutral hardware and software-defined technology based on open interfaces and community-developed standards. Unlike traditional RAN, OpenRAN decouples hardware and software.”

Parallel and Vodafone are receiving the award for their joint openRAN network testing taking place in Turkey and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A final angle worth considering is the device side of things, where LG Uplus received the award for Best Mobile Innovation for Media and Entertainment for the U+VR 5G and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G modem was honored with the Disruptive Device Innovation Award.
