Verizon, which remained second, saw a strong increase in speeds, likely due to new C-Band deployments
Ookla’s latest speed tests concluded that T-Mobile US was the fastest mobile operator in the United States during Q1 2022 with a median download speed of 117.83 Mbps, while Verizon Wireless came in first for fastest fixed broadband during the same timeframe with a median download speed of 184.36 Mbps.
Focusing on mobile download speeds, the report revealed that Verizon overtook AT&T for second place and AT&T finished third. For T-Mobile, the latest numbers represent a significant strong increase in speed, which has previous median download speed of 90.65 Mbps during Q4 2021 and 62.35 Mbps in Q3 2021.
When it comes to mobile latency, T-Mobile US and Verizon tied for the lowest latency at 31 ms, while AT&T came in third at 34 ms.
In measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, Ookla found that T-Mobile had the highest Consistency Score in the U.S. during Q1 2022, with 88.3% of results showing at least 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds, while Verizon Wireless was second at 84.6% and AT&T was third at 82.1%. However, when measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance over a 5G connection, specifically, Ookla found no statistical winner. T-Mobile had 79.9%, Verizon had 79.0% and AT&T had 66.8%.
And while T-Mobile also had the fastest median 5G download speed in the U.S. at 191.12 Mbps, Verizon, which remained second, saw a strong increase in 5G speeds from 78.52 Mbps in Q4, like the result of its new C-band deployments. AT&T, which also turned on new 5G spectrum during Q1 2022, remained third at 68.43 Mbps, which is not too different that its previously reported speeds.
Lastly, Ookla also looks at 5G Availability, a metric that captures the percentage of users on 5G-capable devices that spend the majority of their time on 5G, both roaming and on-network. During Q1 2022, T-Mobile US had the best 5G Availability in the U.S. at 65.0%. AT&T was second at 49.4% and Verizon was third at 28.2%.
As mentioned at the start of this article, T-Mobile US may have taken the 5G (layer) cake when it comes to mobile, but Verizon, once again, was revealed by Ookla to be the fastest fixed broadband provider in the United States during Q1 2022 with a median download speed of 184.36 Mbps. Comcast/Xfinity was second, Cox third, Spectrum fourth, AT&T Internet fifth and CenturyLink a distant sixth.
Similarly, Verizon also had the lowest median latency for top fixed broadband providers at 8 ms. Cox was second, AT&T Internet and Xfinity tied for third, CenturyLink was fifth and Spectrum sixth.
Ookla also found that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was the fastest popular device in the U.S. at 116.33 Mbps during Q1 2022. Check out the full Ookla mobile and fixed broadband reports for more results.
