Versa Networks publishes global SD-WAN survey

Versa Networks recently published a report that found software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) adoption is on the rise as a way to improve security.

SD-WAN is a way of connecting and securing WANs, which are used by data centers and branch offices, across large-scale distances. Versa SD-WAN and SD-Security are deployed by tier-one and two providers globally. According the report, by 2019, over 90% of enterprises will look to have launched SD-WAN.

The survey consisted of feedback from 309 participants representing five continents. The report found that over 85% of companies consider SD-WAN as a way to increase security and minimize sprawl. Approximately 96% of respondents indicated an aggregated approach for networking and security is needed.

The growing complexity of the network due to the cloud and mobile technology was deemed the most challenging part of managing and securing branch networks at 39%. Insufficient IT personnel followed at 36%, with challenges related to integrating across security and network products at 23%.

Moreover, 54% of respondents reported experiencing a security breach at the branch network. Approximately 39% of respondents said the breach stayed within the branch, while 15% said the breach allowed access to corporate systems.

When asked what the biggest barriers were to SD-WAN adoption, a lack of understanding concerning SD-WAN technology was cited as the top barrier at 60%, with not enough people qualified in an organization to implement the technology at 58%.

“The results of our survey clearly indicate that enterprises want to reduce complexity, but at the same time, they are deploying a multitude of devices to combat security threats, which paradoxically adds to the existing network complexity,” said Rob McBride, head of product marketing of Versa Networks, in a statement. “Versa Networks is committed to helping organizations overcome these hurdles with a single integrated software solution that combines SD-WAN and advanced security, so that these organizations can build out the network of tomorrow with peace of mind that they are protected from the threats of today.”
