Gemalto targets enterprise sector with on-demand security platform

Gemalto, an international digital security company based in Amsterdam, announced the deployment of SafeNet Data Protection On Demand, a new security-as-a-service platform that integrates with IT systems, DevOps tools and cloud services.

Gemalto described SafeNet Data Protection On Demand as a comprehensive data protection solution, which is intended to be easily implemented with existing IT infrastructure. It is equipped with management tools that allow administrators to control encryption keys throughout lifecycle and across cloud-based services like SalesForce. In addition, its hardware security modules provide protection for transactions, identities and applications by securing cryptographic keys, and provisioning encryption, decryption, authentication and digital signing services.

“SafeNet Data Protection On Demand simplifies data security operations by lowering the cost of ownership, reducing deployment times and eliminating the need to manage multiple solutions,” said Sebastien Cano, executive vice president for enterprise and cybersecurity at Gemalto. “The platform’s cloud neutrality model also brings speed, agility and flexibility for users to deploy the data security services they need in minutes with flexible pay-as-you-go pricing.”

What makes the solution unique, according to Gemalto, is no hardware or software needs to be purchased, configured or managed. Instead, it is managed through Gemalto’s cloud services, a potentially attractive feature for administrators with limited resources. According to Gemalto, the platform is tailored to work with the products and solutions of major tech companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Dell EMC, Google, IBM, Microsoft, NetApp, Huawei, Oracle and Salesforce. Moreover, users can create and develop secure higher order use cases leveraging proprietary and/or third party APIs.

“Complexity has always been a pain point for organizations when it comes to deploying encryption and key management, and the growth of cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) will only magnify this challenge,” said Garrett Bekker, principal analyst at 451 Research. “By providing organizations with a single consolidated platform accessible through an online marketplace, Gemalto’s SafeNet Data Protection On Demand can allow companies of all sizes to deploy encryption, key management and hardware security module offerings with only a mouse click, eliminating the burdens of physical deployments and also helping resource-constrained enterprises address the growing shortage of skilled security personnel.”

The solution shortly follows Gemalto disclosing its results for the first half of 2017. Gemalto CEO Philippe Vallée described the results as disappointing, citing challenges related to on-going adjustments in US EMV demand in the second quarter of the year. Although, Gallée predicted “year-on-year stable revenue” in the second half of the year due in part to advancements in Gemalto’s enterprise, government and M2M activities. The SafeNet solution may play an role in Gemalto achieving stability for the year.
